D.I.Y & Binge drinking.
ok so now im starting to feel a real path forming.. my idea is centered around the pay off "supplying the culture."
Playing on the idea of binge drinking starting to become part of New Zealand's culture along with other kiwi institutions such as D.I.Y.
The home made funnel is really something of a focal point for me. Encompassing a sort of kiwi D.I.Y and know-how along with its obvious relationship with binge drinking.
A particular TVC that I have been thinking about circles around the idea of a father handing down the kiwi culture to his son. The D.I.Y. aspect however is related to binge drinking as the father / son D.I.Y session revolves around making a beer bong. The father proceeds to say "son, D.I.Y is about being a kiwi. It's part of our culture!" And then producing the end product which is a beer bong.
This idea relates to the message of what influence are we having on our children. Are we "supplying the culture" (of binge drinking). Is it a kiwi institution passed down from father to son like D.I.Y. is?
Now I don't think the ad is fully formed just yet .. Want to draw up a few more ads too. But I think the message is almost finished.

"stop supplying our culture"
Ok so in terms of art direction etc they're rubbish. So please ignore!
But I think the idea is pushing along quite nicely.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p916yeFa2Xk

i love this ad.
So powerful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p916yeFa2Xk
The problem im coming across is how to tell a story in a print ad. .. One as potentially as memorable as that.
But remaining colloquial! Kiwi!

*more brain storming
Your teenager is a true blue kiwi.
idea of number 8 wire hanging your son?
the image on a funnel ... and the pipe is in the image if a barrel from a gun. *looking down the barrel?
Still far away from the local thing..
STRONGEST IDEAS.
`~~ > D.I.Y. it's in our blood.
`~~ > Are you supplying the kiwi culture?
`~~ > first person point of view but looks in the mirror to a teenager. Having just thrown up.

Brainstorming
Ok so i have been doing pages and pages of brain storming with pen and paper however I need to get it all online so here is some of the ideas of come up with. in no particular order and none are particularly outstanding.
T/A: Adults? (to be confirmed!)
Insight: the kiwi culture of binge drinking. doing funnels etc as fast as you can etc.
*looking into what teenagers really do when theyre drinking. Drinking to get drunk? How are they drinking?
**shot gunning drinks. **funneling drinks **sculling drinks
~idea of supplying a bomb to these teens and knowing that they have the means to get their hands on the fuse. You give them a box of beers and all they need is the funnel and the next day they could be dead.
*important to retain the colloquial language of new zealanders. Because were addressing new zealanders.
~idea of as kiwi as your 1st day out fishing. 1st day at school. and your first funnel.
~idea: ARE YOU SUPPLYING THE KIWI CULTURE?
~idea of feeding the young. A funnel hanging over a young growing sappling.
*retaining the kiwi feel .. D.I.Y. in making a funnel? However do not want to have it too homage. Parody or any thing like that.
~idea in that however .. D.I.Y. IT'S IN OUR DNA. D.I.Y. IT'S IN OUR BLOOD. hmmm
(the d.i.y. its in our dna thing however is off the Mitre 10 ad. could be an interesting parody????
**first eye point of view style ad. Along the lines of the music video by Prodigy 'Smack my bitch up'. http://vodpod.com/watch/2481681-prodigy-smack-my-bitch-up-uncensored
~No real ideas around this however .. also would require it to be a TVC.
~Perhaps he acts like a adult throughtout the ad and then throws up before looking in the mirror. And in the mirror we see a pimply teenager.
I actually quite like this idea .. its just as a TVC im not sure if its appropriate for this project.
Could show the ridiculous nature of binge drinking. Comparing it to binge drinking on say lemonade. People funneling a new age energy drink? Not sure about this idea .. a bit far fetched. **
"kiwi ingenuity isn't lost on the youth"
image of a pipe, a funnel and then some tape. then the line - kiwi ingenuity. From father to son.
**idea of a kit set? hmmmm. Really need to get some of these ideas in.

TARGET AUDIENCE
ok so after some research I was reasonably surprised! For example if your son is having a birthday you may supply alcohol at the party. As long as the party is a private social gathering.
So my general issue is I want to tackle is youth binge drinking.
Who do I target? The teenagers or the adults supplying?
Remembering im not allowed to show teenagers drinking. Such as on billboards etc.

finding my topic/
What I really need to do is define my subject. Bring it down a notch so its not so 'major project' in its scope.
One particular insight I have is methods of drinking by under ages. For example doing funnels and yardies. All of these utensils are extremely accessible to under ages and the issue is that they are getting average amounts of alcohol but using it in a way which gets them extremely drunk.
So its something like, your breaking the law by giving them alcohol however they're abiding by the law by funneling it.
**research is needed on drinking laws in New Zealand

the issue.
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO1008/S00289/govt-sends-message-that-under-age-drinking-ok.htm
So im rather interested in taking on the issue of under age drinking. An ad campaign targeting parents about supplying alcohol to their children.
Also older siblings etc.
Something along the lines of you wouldn't give your children cocaine to go to a party. So why would you break the law and give them alcohol.

Depression New Zealand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ9yRhCiLfA
Above is the link to the youtube video of the TVC.
John Kirwan was a New Zealand figure well respected who fronted as the face of Depression New Zealand. This is such a powerful ad almost purely because of the confronting of stereotypes which it does so succesfully. John Kirwan is considered one of New Zealands best All Blacks, a man of great respect and one who seems to embody the kiwi male identity. However he suffered from depression. Something which most kiwi 'blokes' would consider something which only the weak would suffer from.
Still no real colloquial terms are used.. however it does use the idea of the typical kiwi bloke and New Zealand landscape to great success.
Public service ads from the world.
There is no reference to cultural context in these ads. Well none that im awear of. Which is not so surprising. However they are great examples of public service adverts.

if you drink and drive, your a bloody idiot.
Don't you just love a good pun?
Anyway, pun or not these ads are powerful stuff. i think just to get an overview I will look in depth into the idea of the drink driving ad campaigns.
This one is an old one. Yet I noticed it still has the same pay off: if you drink and drive, your a bloody idiot.
Addressing the typical or sterotypical kiwi bloke. Attempting to address a problem which it seems is an accepeted part of kiwi culture. In the latter scenes you can see him given a drink 'one for the road.'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN8oWsMvxtw&feature=related
This ad is from 2000. What I found interesting is that he was given a drink and it seemed generally accepted that he was fit to drive home.
However I wonder if such an ad would be aired now? Can we imagine a drink driving ad which the person who dies is encouraged to have a drink before he leaves? Is this potentially a shift in kiwi drink driving cutlure in the last decade?
*** thought to progress on with is that perhaps I could shock the audience with a person encouraged to drink before driving.
Or even: A particular issue in the media early to middle last year was under age drinkers. Is this a possible target. Parents? Adults?

Idea! ~ public service notices. Ads etc.
YOUR A BLOODY IDIOT.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjn2JKrlkcU
I am starting to look into the idea of public service ads. Ranging from defend our foreshore campaigns by the Act party to Loose lips sink ship ad campaigns in the UK during World War II to New Zealand's own drink drive and binge drinking ad campaigns.
Ok so im going to start with some exploration.
Obvious example is the Tui "yeah right" campaign. Brilliantly simple campaign centered around New Zealand's laid back culture.
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0303/S00244.htm <~ relevant article! (Good read).
But I just want to explore a few more options here.
100% pure ad campaigns are interesting. Show a new zealand that alot of new zealanders dont see. What does this mean for tourism? If we show a new zealand that includes sky diving, snow boarding, walking through river valleys, dinning on the auckland harbour what would they think when they saw a stream with an ankor milk bottle lying there. How can we make these ads a more genuine experience than a PR movement.
idea: 100% pure or 100% of your money back.
